WINDSOR CHAIR MAKING CLASS

Here is a unique opportunity to work with well-known Windsor Chair Maker David Wright from Kentucky. David is the past head of the furniture design program at the Kentucky School of Craft located in the Appalachian Mountains near Hindman. In 2004, he developed the curriculum for a two-year degree program for individuals seeking to develop fine craft skills and design in furniture. Currently he is “artist in residence” at the Appalachian Artisan Center located also in Hindman. Prior to this venture, he was a professional chair maker specializing in the Windsor chair. In 1986, he set up a chair making studio in the well-known area around Berea and worked there in the ensuing years producing chairs of national recognition among collectors, galleries, and museums.

Starting in 1990 David began teaching the art of hand-tooled Windsor chair making first as a request by individuals wanting to make their own chairs and eventually to woodworking guilds and private woodworking schools around the nation. His work has been featured in Fine Woodworking, American Woodworker, American Woodturner and Home Furniture.

This week long Windsor chair making seminar will concentrate on the making of the classic sack-back arm chair. It is one of the more famous Windsor designs and can be a stand alone chair or made into a set. Typical of Windsor chair making in the 18th century, this course will employ traditional green wood, hand-tooled methods. As students you will be introduced to several uncommon woodworking skills, such as riving (splitting) wood with the froe; shaping the back spindles, arm and bow on the shave horse with drawknife and spokeshave; steam bending the arm and bow; boring holes with bit and brace in assembly; carving seats with the inshave; plus turning at the lathe the legs, post and stretchers. Special attention will be devoted to design, both traditional or contemporary, finishing using traditional milk paints or modern finishing materials will be discussed, wood selection straight from the log and construction techniques such as using sight lines to bore spindle holes to accurate multiple turnings at the lathe using story sticks. This will be a fun and good challenge for the enthusiastic woodworker or hobbyist.

Class Price: $670  Limited Enrollment  The cost of the chair kit for each student in the class is $195. David Wright will bring all you need to make the chair including some of the turnings pre-turned.  Here are two great things about this class.  First, after you finish the week you will want to take a break and sit down….. you will have a chair to do it in. Second, once you know how to make one chair you can go home and make a whole set of chairs for your table. Talk about an economic stimulus package. Make one and go home and multiply.

Price $670 Limited Enrollment.
